Jose Visits America Pt. III

Hey Everyone. Hope everyone is enjoying their summer regardless of how they are spending it. It’s been great for me so far. I’ve been able to get my work done as well as spend time with one of my main bro’s Jose. We’ve been able to catch up and share some good laughs and reminisce on all the previous summers we’ve spent together. When spending time with good friends and family the world seems to slow down for me. You truly appreciate what is important, making and spending time with loved ones not material things. Material things are nice to have but the effect of them wears off very quickly. Making memories with friends last forever. Sometimes it doesn’t even matter what you do just as long as the company is good.

Well this was one of the those occasions. I spent my weekend helping Jose clean and clear out his in laws house. Our job was to tidy things up and do a little spring cleaning if you will. As I arrived to Jose’s parents house, I took a look around and realized wow, they have a lot of stuff. Stuff that just accumulates and starts to take up space, valuable space. It’s weird how things just start to accumulate. Things like old magazines, trinkets and just collection of miscellaneous items that just lay around the house. Jose’s father in law called and arranged a junk removal company to help us out, The guys that showed up were very helpful and were very quick and efficient. They definitely saved us a lot of time.

The Happiness Advantage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work

Book: The Happiness Advantage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work
Author: Shawn Achor

Takeaway: The human brain is more productive and functions better when we are in a “happy” state. Becoming happier is a skill that we can develop over time through practice. We can also triumph over procrastination. When we are in a “happy” state this radiates outward and is highly contagious ultimately raising other people’s productivity.

I thoroughly enjoyed Achor’s work in The Happiness Advantage. To be honest, I didn’t have high expectations when starting to read this book and really learning anything new. Boy was I mistaken.

Hey gang. I hope everyone out there is enjoying their Fourth of July weekend and realizes that the Fourth of July is more than just outdoor BBQ’s with friends and family. It’s also a time to give thanks and remain appreciative for those who have serviced our country in the arms forces and also those that paid the ultimate price for our freedom and lost their lives for us. Anyway public PSA over.

I was able to catch up with my Jose the last couple of days and it’s been great. A small group of us went out this last Friday night to a bar that we used to go to years ago. Jose still knew and kept in touch with the DJ there. The DJ was cool and hooked us up with a nice price for bottle service. We all hung out together. It reminded me of when we used to to and party 10 years ago. Except we were no longer in our mid twenties, lol. It was like old times, again. Surprisingly between 5 guys we didn’t finish the bottle we ordered. We just don’t party as hard as we used to. For me, my alcohol tolerance is relatively low these days and I don’t drink as much as I used to. I think the same holds true for the other guys as well. We still had a good night out with just the fellas.

Saturday was a great day as well. My roommate and I went to Jose’s BBQ along with about 20 of our other mutual friends. We all talked, ate and had a couple of drinks while catching up. It was nice to be all hanging out again as a big group. A lot of our mutual friends now have kids so it was really cute to see them all hangout together too. The next generation if you will. I consider the friends I’ve known for 15+ framily. They’ve been riding with me for along time and we have shared a lot of special memories together. Although I am not able to see and hang with them all the time when we do it’s just like the old days. Plenty of laughs, food and reminiscing. That’s what life’s about, sharing memories hanging out and enjoying each other’s company.

Till next time.

The 10x Rule: The Only Difference Between Success and Failure

Book: The 10x Rule: The Only Difference Between Success and Failure
Author: Grant Cardone

Takeaway: Massive imperfect action. Make a goal 10 times higher than what your current goal is. Most people underestimate their ability to achieve abundance. The mindset of creating a safe easy to obtain goal will not catapult you to the next stratosphere you need to get to in order to completely change your life. Even if you don’t reach your 10x goal you will be levels ahead of where you would be if you settled for a less than optimal goal.

This book was recommended to me from a buddy of mine. Let me tell you, it changed my outlook on how to create and pursue goals. Grant is a genius and is currently one of my favorite people that I follow and listen to on the internet. He knows his stuff. When I first started to read this book and become exposed to his material, he came off as a bit arrogant. By the time I got to the end of The 10x Rule my attitude and outlook on his personality completely changed.

Grant is a winner and is willing to do what others aren’t willing to do and while this sounds simple this is the reason why he is a cut above everyone in his class. I’ve summarized below a few takeaways after reading his book. After reading Cardone’s work I learned how to do the following:

  • Achieve goals that I was previously to scared to pursue
  • Set 10x goals and create a plan to achieve them with success
  • How to attract and create abundance and be happy in all areas of your life
  • How to effectively use fear as a motivation factor to take massive action
  • Never settle for less than what you previously wanted
  • Exude confidence and transform yourself into a walking breathing model of success

I will continue to absorb as much material from Grant Cardone as possible. This was definitely a game changer for me and I am grateful my buddy introduced me to him and his work.

Jose Visits America

Jose, one of my best friends has come to visit all the way from Germany. We have shared many great memories together and basically finished growing up together. He has an incredible story that fascinates me every time I think about it.

Jose and his family came to America (Los Angeles) as Panamanian refugees in the mid 80’s.  They later moved down to the San Diego area shortly thereafter and we met years later through mutual friends. His mother and father were hard working honest people raising two children, Jose and his sister Tracy while seamlessly adapting and assimilating into American culture.

We became best friends through mutual friends and very similiar interests. We both loved mid 90’s hip-hop and we often times agree and debate on what rapper has the all time best catalog. We were also very big into tech, everything from computers, phones and gadgets. Oh……and of course girls. Jose had a sense of style and charisma that always made me feel comfortable in any situation we were in.

Jose found the love of his life 5 years ago. Jose, his wife Janet moved to Belgium to continue building Janet’s career in child development. They recently had their first child, Ana and have recently relocated to Germany.

I had the opportunity to live and work in Amsterdam for a summer and visit Jose and have them visit me on a weekly basis. It was the best summer ever. We went out in Amsterdam and soaked up Dutch culture. Amsterdam is an incredible city and is definitely one of my all time favorite places to go. Brussels in Belgium is also a very charming city and has it own unique mix of culture and richness. It was a marvelous experience for us both and we really got to explore European living.

Anyway they are here visiting and I am extremely happy for Jose and his family and the life they have created. I really miss our days hanging out and growing up together but I am glad they are genuinely happy and live a fantastic life overseas. I’ll be spending time with them while they are here. A couple of BBQ’s, some drinks on the town and some beach days sound like a perfect plan to get in some quality time.

Till next time.

The Millionaire Fastlane: Crack the Code to Wealth and Live Rich for a Lifetime

Book: The Millionaire Fastlane
Author: MJ DeMarco

Takeaway: Don’t be stuck in “The Slowlane”. Driving in the slowlane will seal your fate of financial mediocrity. Relying on a 401k, a good job and the stock market to build wealth
is an outdated plan that you are leaving to chance. The housing, stock and job market are unpredictable. None of these factors you will ever be in full control of. You need to create a “Fastlane” plan to wealth that you can control, leverage and scale quickly.

I loved this book. While the style of writing is a bit brash and in your face, I loved every second of it. MJ DeMarco really sticks it to you and makes valid points that the middleclass is in trouble. Leaving it to the stock market and other traditional investing platforms to build serious wealth is a flawed plan with mediocre return. Even if you do “get lucky” with these traditional investing platforms you won’t be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor until your well into your 50’s and that’s a best case scenario.

After reading this book, I realized I was driving in the “slowlane”. It was quite the kick in the ants that has fueled my fire to get in gear and drive like a maniac in the Fastlane. What’s the Fastlane you ask? The Fastlane is a where you have full control of your financial destiny. You are in business for yourself. You take massive imperfect action and you are relentless. You don’t really on one source of income to feed your family.

How can one achieve this? The method that MJ talked about that really resonated with my was his creation, usage and leverage of modern technology. It’s easier than ever to start a business and build income and revenue from the internet. MJ outlines a business model that I just started mimicking. The model revolves around internet lead generation. I won’t get into the super specifics but the model works because of a few key and critical factors; scalability, low overhead, can operate 24hrs a day and can leverage modern technology.

I would highly recommend this book to business owners everywhere and especially recent college grads. It is an updated modern approach on how to build a wealth and get out of the slowlane!

Secrets of the Millionaire Mind: Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth

Author: T. Harv Ecker.
Takeaway: It’s all about cleaning up your mindset, attitude and perspective around money. Harv’s point is driven home as he helps his readers understand that wealth and an abundance of money in one’s life is not bad or evil. He gives examples of how society views having wealth and money as something sinister. Many of us have been mentally conditioned from childhood that “money is the root of all evil” or “money can’t buy happiness”.
In the words of Mark Twain, I believe that “The lack of money is the root of all evil.” Ecker goes on throughout the book to change the reader’s mindset to mentally let go of the conditioned negative connotation that most of us have around it wealth.
As a child I fell into this category of thinking that those with an abundance of money were either doing something illegal or unethical to get it. I certainly had better morals than to lie, cheat and steal my way to the top of the financial ladder. My beloved grandmother, Rita, who helped raise me was very thrifty. Not until my early 30’s did I actualize realize the mindset and time period she grew up in formed her future outlook on money. You see, my grandmother survived two world wars, the great depression and decades of financial crisis. 1250514Rita’s mindset was to always save and spend little, as we never know what the next day can bring. These valuable principles were engraved in my head at an early age. I learned that money didn’t grow on trees and that it was always a better idea to save for a rainy day than spend frivolously.
After readings Secrets of the Millionaire Mind I was able to understand that the reason why a lot of people never get what they want is simply because they never knew what they truly wanted. They were sending mixed signals into the universe and what they truly felt about money. If you are not seriously committed to building wealth, then you won’t. To put it even more simply, where you put effort and energy will determine the results that are received. Change your outlook on wealth and money and change the abundance to which it will be attracted into your life.
